Affidavit of single status for Costa Rica
If you have not been married before, you must present a sworn statement to that effect. There are three ways to do it: (a) you can come to the U.S. Embassy's Consular Section and make a sworn statement before a consular officer, (b) you can do it before a Costa Rican attorney, or (c) you can bring an affidavit swearing that you are unmarried (free download), signed, notarized and apostilled in the U.S.
Other documents required for getting married in Costa Rica
- In all cases, you will hav a certified copy of your U.S. birth certificate. This document needs to be apostilled. We can obtain certified and apostilled copies of birth certificates from most U.S. states. Please contact us.
- In case of a previous marriage in the U.S. you will need to submit a certified copy of your divorce judgment authenticated by an apostille or a certified copy of your previous spouse's death certificate authenticated by an apostille. Costa Rican authorities recognize U.S. documents when they have been properly authenticated in the U.S. Documents issued in the United States CANNOT be authenticated overseas.
