If you need to submit a copy of your passport or ID overseas, a New Jersey apostille ensures the document is legally recognized in Hague Convention countries. A notarized copy of your passport or ID must be authenticated by the New Jersey Secretary of State before it can be accepted abroad. How to prepare a copy for an apostille?
Option 1:
Make a copy of your document.
On the copy write:
Sign in front of a notary public, make sure the notary includes a proper notarial statement (jurat) If there is no notarial statement on the document (just the signature and the stamp), the document will be rejected!
To be eligible for an apostille / legalization, your signature and the signature of the notary public on the document must be original.
Option 2:
In the State of New Jersey the notaries are allowed by law to attest to copies of the documents.
Take the original document to any New Jersey notary and ask for an "attested copy"
Check if the notary has included a proper copy certification statement:
Remotely notarized documents are not eligible for apostilles.
The State of New Jersey does not apostille documents where the notary's license has expired. Active notaries only.
